Having asked a fair number of people how they broke a piece of glass, a pattern emerges quickly: it is almost never during use. It is while moving it, while washing it, or while it was standing somewhere it should not have been standing.

The sink is the most dangerous place

A ceramic sink basin is harder than borosilicate, and a full sink hides what is beneath the surface. The fix is trivial and effective: lay a folded towel or a rubber mat in the basin before anything goes in, and wash one piece at a time. Most sink breakages involve two items making contact.

Drying without a rack

Wet glass on a smooth counter slides. Tall pieces standing upright on a drying rack are stable until something brushes past them. Drying on a folded towel, laid horizontally where the shape allows, removes both risks. Where a piece must stand, it should stand away from the counter edge and away from any cupboard door that opens above it.

Transport

On cases: a padded hard case with cut foam is the only genuinely reliable transport method. Soft cases prevent scratches but do very little against impact.

Long-term storage

Store clean and dry. Residue left in a piece over months oxidises and hardens into a deposit that resists solvent, and any trapped moisture leaves mineral etching on the inner surface. Both are permanent in practice.

Temperature stability matters more than temperature itself. A cupboard in a heated room is fine; an unheated garage or an attic is not, because the daily temperature swing puts repeated stress on the glass, and any moisture present will cycle through condensation. Keep pieces separated so they cannot knock together, and keep them away from anything that vibrates — the top of a refrigerator is a surprisingly common loss.
